not your girl

Lily lived a life that seemed ordinary on the surface. She worked a mundane job, lived in a small apartment, and spent her evenings lost in the pages of books. Lily’s quiet demeanor masked a world of emotions she struggled to share with anyone.

One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon and cast long shadows across her apartment, Lily’s phone rang. It was her mother calling, as she often did to check in on her daughter.

“Hello, Mom,” Lily answered, her voice soft and slightly weary.

“Lily, sweetheart, how are you?” Her mother’s voice carried a warmth that was like a comforting hug over the phone.

Lily hesitated for a moment, debating whether to share her inner turmoil with her mother. But she couldn’t find the words, so she settled for a simple, “I’m okay, Mom. Just a bit tired from work.”

Her mother’s concern was evident. “Are you sure, dear? You sound a little distant.”

Lily forced a smile that her mother couldn’t see. “I promise, Mom. It’s just been a long day. I’ll be fine.”

“Alright, if you say so. Just remember, I’m here if you ever want to talk.”

“I know, Mom. Thanks. I love you.”

“I love you too, Lily. Take care.”

As Lily hung up the phone, a familiar emptiness settled within her. She longed to open up to her mother, to share the overwhelming emotions that swirled inside her. But the fear of burdening her with her troubles always held her back.

That evening, Lily found herself working late at the cozy restaurant where she waitressed. The restaurant had a small corner where a keyboard was set up, and customers sometimes played soothing melodies while dining. Tonight was no exception, as a tall man with tousled brown hair sat at the keyboard, his fingers dancing gracefully across the keys.

The restaurant was dimly lit, with the soft glow of candles on each table casting a warm ambiance. Lily watched from a distance as the stranger’s fingers moved with precision and grace. The hauntingly beautiful notes he played seemed to echo through the room, wrapping everyone in a cocoon of melancholic beauty.

A few diners stopped their conversations to listen, and some even closed their eyes, allowing the music to transport them to another world. Lily, too, was captivated. It was as if the melodies were reaching out to the deepest corners of her soul, resonating with the emotions she kept hidden.

When the stranger finished his piece, the room erupted in applause. He acknowledged the applause with a nod, his eyes briefly meeting Lily’s. She felt a strange connection in that moment, as if he had seen through her facade and touched something within her.

“You ever think about that night?” Marcus’s voice cut through the silence like glass. His breath hung in the air, cold and still, though they were inside. Deji didn’t look up.
