I reluctantly got into Mr. Dan’s car and we drove away from his company. Even while he was behind the steering wheel, he couldn’t help but steal glances at me. What is wrong with this man? I thought to myself. Maybe I’m a fool for agreeing to come along with him, but I needed this job, so I decided to tolerate whatever he was doing.
“Where do you live?” Mr. Dan asked.
“I just came to this state yesterday. I slept in an uncompleted building,” Rachel replied.
“Okay, wait. I know what to do,” Mr. Dan said and made a U-turn.
What are we doing at the bank? I wondered silently. Well, let me keep quiet and watch him. He opened the car door and headed straight to the banking hall. In less than 15 minutes, he returned and handed me a brown envelope. What is really happening?
“That is 500,000. It’s yours now. Take it. You will live in my house,” Mr. Dan said.
At first, I was dumbfounded. It seemed that being beautiful had its perks. I watched as he drove us to his home, unaware of the hellish drama I was about to experience. Little did I know that I would curse that very day.
The car came to a halt as we reached Mr. Dan’s mansion, and we walked inside.
“Hello, darling. You’re back. And who is this girl?” Diana asked. Diana was Mr. Dan’s wife. I figured it out by surveying the portrait hanging on the wall.
“She is my new wife,” Mr. Dan answered.
“What?!” Diana and I exclaimed simultaneously.
“How dare you bring this slut into our matrimonial home!” Diana shouted.
I was at a loss for words. Mr. Dan and Diana were engaged in a heated argument when a girl of about 12 years old walked in.
“What is happening here?” she shouted.
“Your father brought his girlfriend here,” Diana said, sobbing.
“No, ma’am, I am not your husband’s girlfriend. I am not a home wrecker. I came for the position of a cleaner, and I agreed to follow him home because I thought he needed a cleaner here in his house,” I replied, sobbing.
I never once thought that I would be the cause of breaking up a happy family. Oh God, what is happening? Please vindicate me.
“Liar! You are a blatant liar and a home wrecker!” Diana hurled insults at me while sobbing.
“Mr. Dan, please tell your wife that I am only a cleaner,” I pleaded.
“But I love you, Rachel,” that was all Mr. Dan could say as he stared at me.
“Hey you, follow me,” the little girl said as she grabbed my hand. When we reached the gate, she stopped and looked at me.
“Hey aunty, I believe you,” she said.
I felt a surge of happiness within me. Before I could utter a word, she continued, “Go far away from here. It’s not just a matter of being beautiful anymore. It has become a curse that ruins relationships and happy homes. You are cursed with beauty.” With that, she pushed the gate closed, locked it, and left me to face the world on my own…
